Nineteen-year-old Steve Maxwell just wants to get his feet on the star road to find a better homeworld. By facing down Lotus Tong thugs, he earns an opportunity to become a spacer apprentice on a merchant spaceship, leaving the corruption and crime of Earth behind. Sure, he needs to prove himself to an older, tight-knit crew, but how bad can it be if he keeps his head down and the decks clean?
He never counted on the interstellar trade routes having their own problems, from local wars to plagues of pirates – and the jade in his luggage is hotter than a neutron star. Steve’s left a world of troubles behind, only to find a galaxy of them ahead…
By Sarah Hoyt
The France of the Musketeers has changed. Decades ago, someone opened a tomb in Eastern Europe, and from that tomb crawled an ancient horror, who in turn woke others of its kind.
Now Paris is beset by vampires, the countryside barren and abandoned. The Cardinal has become a vampire, the church is banned, the king too cowed to fight.
Until now, the three Musketeers, Athos, Porthos and Aramis have stood as a bulwark against the encroaching evil, their swords defending the innocent and helpless.
But last night, in a blood mass, Athos was turned into a Vampire. And a young vampire orphan has just arrived from Gascony: Monsieur D’Artagnan.
Things are about to get… complicated.
The Amazon link is live, and the other sites that allow direct preorders should be up shortly. Actual publish date is April 29, and with luck, the paper version will also be available by then.
While I’m working on book 3 I will be redoing the look of The Scent of Metal to match the series style and adding a teaser chapter, so don’t worry if you see the book listing change. Same book, different wrapper.
The book is with the editor now, and depending on how bad the carnage is among the commas I should have the ebook done and available at the usual fine retail establishments by mid to late April, and paper book shortly thereafter.
Isn’t this luscious?? And below the jump, a sample chapter for your delectation. Ware the commas….

Moire Cameron ran to protect her secrets — ran to the heart of an interstellar alien war. Her fellow mercenaries care only about her fighting skills, not where — or when — she got them. You’d think that would be good enough…

Well, that was fun! My very first YA novel. And that, in part, is why it is only up on Amazon at the moment. It’s a whole different market that I have no experience with, and let’s face it…Amazon has the marketing clout and reach these days. I have it in Select for 3 months, and I’ll evaluate how things are going at renewal time.
Next, I’ll get the print version ready (going to try some different things there, too), and then… I have some other projects on the short list. The next two books in the world of Scent of Metal, definitely, and I’m noodling a prequel to Firehearted. And of course, there WILL be more Mage Guardian books, focusing on different characters but always having adventures.
Not my usual sort of fiction: dystopia. And the supreme importance of communication. I did a good bit of experimentation for this story, and it turned out pretty well, I think.
Have we got deals for you! Behind the time machine with a few dents and a missing “back” button, and the stuffed T Rex head, rummage through a delightful assortment of wonderful ebooks, reduced in price for just this week for your summer reading enjoyment…
THIS WEEK ONLY!
Currently a mere $1.99, after August 8 Bureau of Substandards Annual Report will be $2.99, so now’s your chance to get it cheap! Trans-dimensional bureaucracy, cute baby krakens, and zombie tuna sandwiches! (B&N)
And please take a look at my fellow Human Wave authors, who also have fine wares at a (temporary) bargain price!
What Is Human Wave?
When did it become fashionable for published fiction to be full of self-loathing for qualities most intelligent humans value? Where’s the adventure, the courage, the fun? We suppose it was about the same time that Literature Majors because the arbiters of what was good and right in publishing.
Fortunately their reign of terror grey goo and boredom is at an end. Having gone Indie, authors can choose to write humans as they wish. And since most authors are (allegedly) human they can even write heroic humans who fight for things that have meaning.
The ennui of the cognoscenti no longer holds sway. The new bad boys on the block are Human Wave authors, whose characters might sometimes be trapped in dystopia but never helpless. And if they must go down fighting, they do so gloriously and for principles bigger than themselves.
Be daring. Be creative. Be revolutionary. Read (and write) Human Wave.
